Universal Studios Monsters: The Invisible Man action figure by Sideshow Toy (2000)

Over the last few weeks I’ve been taking a closer look at some of my favourite action figures, namely the Universal Studios Monsters collection released by Sideshow Toy between 1999 and 2001. The series featured 15 figures that paid homage to many of Universal’s iconic movie monsters — Frankenstein, The Wolf Man and The Mummy, to name  few — as well as the actors who portrayed them. This week it’s the turn of Claude Rains’ memorable performance as The Invisible Man, from the Universal film released in 1933.

Released by Universal Studios in 1956 The Mole People was one of the company’s less successful B-movies, and is all but forgotten today. However, it technically did feature a Universal movie monster so in 2000 it received the action figure treatment by Sideshow Toy.

Universal Studios Monsters was a collection of posable action figures released by Sideshow Toy between 1999 and 2001. The 15 figures in the collection featured realistic interpretations of some of Universal’s most iconic movie monsters, and the actors who portrayed them. Over the last few weeks I’ve been taking a closer look at the collection, and this week it’s the turn of Lon Chaney’s classic interpretation of The Phantom of the Opera, based on the film released by Universal in 1925.

This week it’s the turn of Boris Karloff‘s creature from Son of Frankenstein, released by Universal in 1939.

The silent era of Hollywood established some of cinema’s greatest legends — Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin are just some of the many names that spring to mind — but few thrilled (and flat-out terrified) those early audiences more than Lon Chaney, The Man of a Thousand Faces. In 2000 Sideshow Toy paid homage to the silent star with an action figure based on his indelible performance as Victor Hugo’s tormented protagonist Quasimodo — The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
